ABOUT NFS

Abe Sandquist founded Natural Fertilizer Services, Inc. (NFS) in 2007 on the heels of his employment with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.  While developing Nutrient Management Plans as a soil conservationist, he learned that there were many agricultural waste products not being used to their maximum potential by crop and livestock producers. After explaining these nutrient management plans to producers, many of them were surprised at how much their waste products could be worth if they were used effectively and applied in a professional manner.

Environmental regulations play a major role.  Because  of the Clean  Water Act, many rules and regulations have been put in place that force farmers to manage there nutrients and chemicals in order to reduce environmental impacts.  NFS assists crop and livestock producers in their efforts to take advantage of agricultural waste products through professional, agronomic advice and accurate handling and application. As a result, we improve crop performance while reducing environmental impacts by complying with your state's environmental regulation requirements.

START UP CASE STUDY:
“My first experience using my custom manure brokering program was while I was still employed by the NRCS.  I was developing a manure management plan for a finishing hog facility and had to inform the owner that his phosphorous loss index was getting a little high for environmental compliance requirements.  My recommendation was that he sell his manure to his neighbor and buy a little commercial nitrogen in return, creating a mutual benefit. After explaining the manure nutrient values and soil test levels to both parties, we made the deal and they both benefited. I feel with proper management of manure, manure can become a win-win-win waste product. It can be utilized in the agriculture sector, with the three wins being the buyer, the seller, and the environment.”
